ChristChurch Multiple Cathedrals Damaged

** Please note:  This contains corrected information on Feb. 24th ChristChurch Triple Tragedy concerning the ChristChurch Anglican Cathedral & the ChristChurch Catholic Cathedral.

There are many churches in ChristChurch, New Zealand, that have been damaged as a result of three earthquakes in the past six months.

The ChristChurch Catholic Cathedral — Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament — was severely damaged in the September 4th, 2010 earthquake.  At that time, services for the congregation were moved to an alternate location — with hopes of returning to the cathedral.

Those hopes were dashed by the Feb. 22nd earthquake when two bell towers & the front facade collapsedRestoration workers & a caretaker who were inside survived.  A priest hiding under a table in the rectory saw one of the towers collapse.

Engineers say it does not appear the cathedral can be saved.  Any stained glass windows still remaining after the Sept. earthquake are in ruins.

These included these half-moon windows & the beautiful window below:

ChristChurch’s Anglican Cathedral sustained major damage from the Feb. earthquake when the spire tore off the Tower.

Cranes have been brought in to remove rubble to get to 22 visitors trapped under the wreckage.

Throughout ChristChurch, more than 150 people are dead & over 200 missing — many are buried in rubble.

The Tower bells are gone.  The Rose window in the South nave wall has also sustained major damage.

ChristChurch Mayor Bob Parker said the iconic Cathedral [Anglican] will be restored — it was a “stunning and symbolic building”.

In the meantime, services throughout ChristChurch are being held outdoors.

Early British reports say ChristChurch may have to rebuild a third of their buildings.  Many buildings in the city centre have been evacuated.

To help with the Anglican Cathedral rebuilding, online donations can be made at ChristChurch Cathedral — Donations.  To help the Catholic Diocese go to Catholic Fundraising.

I wish all the best for the people of New Zealand & especially those in ChristChurch coping with this tragedy.  I hope all the world continues to offer help for them.

Simply A Dawne Thought
